my niece

cry.

“Does grandpa hate me too?”

She was 5.

Now she’s a mother.

Of a black man.

Teach the haters.

Deny them the comfort of ignorance.

And imagined strength in numbers.

Take their fear.

And teach it to my great-grand nephew.

And not shoot anyone.
